Is alcohol bad for you?

Calories are needed to provide energy so the body functions properly. The number of calories in a food depends on the amount of energy the food provides. The number of calories a person needs depends on age, height, weight, gender, and activity level. People who consume more calories than they burn off in normal day activity or during exercise are more likely to be overweight.

From the following mini-table you can see that alcohol contains almost the same number of calories as fat in 1 gram:

Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
Carbohydrate: 1 gram = 4 calories
Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories
Dietary fibre: 1 gram = 3 calories
Water: 0.001 litre = 0 calories

The following guide provides a comparison amongst different sources of alcoholic beverages:

......................................................................................

Note: 1 Calorie = 4.184 kilojoules

As you all know alcohol has been portrayed in society as a cool thing, a way of either socializing with others or as a escape from life/society pressure. But its effects are devastating on the mind (if abused) and in the body as well (if we add alcohol to an already deficient diet).

Check out this table in detail:

.................................................

So it is entirely up to you whether you should continue with this unhealthy practice or not. But honestly alcohol consumption provides no other benefits than temporary pleasure which is fleeting anyway and the significant disadvantage of being highly addictive. I am still trying to understand why society hasn't condemned the use of alcohol but it is quickly judging values such as honesty, trust and virtue. I will talk about this issue in more detail later on.

In the meantime watch this clip and you'll see about the consequences of alcohol misuse:

I agree. I don't see why people use alcohol at all. I think it is terrible. It destroys so many things. someone I know does not abuse it, but ocassionally has a drink, and I can't watch. It makes me so sad. Even a small drink makes me upset...

You people are retarded. I know people who are 90 years old and had drank most of there lives. There is a difference in people who takes a bottle of vodka and down it and the people who might drink four or five beers with some friends. Yes, everyone knows it is bad for you in the long term, but living is bad for you in the long term to. You are decaying just like the rest of the population. If someone abuses it then I would guess that it could kill you. But if you abuse cookies they can kill you too. You people never seem to amaze me.

Alcohol abuse is counterproductive for spiritual practice because we are dealing with psychic energies an alcohol is a very Yang type of substance which burns the Qi of the liver/gallbladder (ruled by the wood element) and blocks their channels (meridians).

Healthwise drinking one or two glasses of wine during a dinner party with a group of friends wouldn't cause a problem at all; however, alcohol has been used as an stimulant and here is when problems will arise.

If we bring TCM into play we know that if drunk in small amounts it stimulates blood circulation, reduces haematomae, vitalizes blood, drives out "wind" and dispels "cold" symptoms, transports medicaments and disperses bad influences. In the clinic approach alcohol is often used to cure "wind", "cold" and pain, neuralgia, cold and painful chest and belly. But humans have resorted to alcohol to find relief from their underlying emotional issues plus the stress and alienation society as a large places upon them. Then alcohol loses its significance into some sort of self-torture mechanism hidden behind a momentarily relief.

This site will never endorse alcohol excessive consumption to mask unresolved emotional issues and pressure from the social environment in order to look cool.
